Girls tennis: Ponies sweep Mounds Park Academy


OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team wrapped up its regular season on Monday with a 7-0 nonconference victory over Mounds Park Academy at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies (12-2) will host Woodbury in the Section 4AA quarterfinals on Wednesday, a team Stillwater defeated 6-1 in conference play on Sept. 4. The eighth-seeded Royals held off St. Paul Central 4-3 in a second-round match on Monday. Wednesday’s other quarterfinal matches include Hill-Murray at second-seeded Mahtomedi, Cretin-Derham Hall at third-seeded Roseville and White Bear Lake at fourth-seeded East Ridge.

Natalie Phippen and Jenna Sherrick did not lose a game while winning for the Ponies at first and second singles and Shelby Anderson prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at third singles. Robbie Ellingson, who like Anderson is usually found in the doubles lineup, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at fourth singles.

Stillwater also won all three doubles matches in straight sets, including Savannah Johnson and Aliza Deming by the score of 6-1, 6-2 at first doubles. Hannah Quinn and Shelby Ahrendt won at second doubles and the team of Maggie Corman-Jackie Ellingson lost just two games at third doubles.

“It was nice to end with a sweep,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said.

n Stillwater also won two of three exhibition singles matches on Monday, including wins by Elizabeth Quinn (6-0) and Emma Germundson (6-2). Remi Larson dropped her singles match 6-4.
