Running: Harnett, Beskau set pace in Jon Francis Half-Marathon

Michael Hartnett of Minneapolis was the top finishers in Saturday’s Jon Francis Half-Marathon at Square Lake Park.

Michael Hartnett of Minneapolis and Brooke Beskau of Hastings were the top finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions of Saturday’s Jon Francis Half-Marathon which concluded at Square Lake Park north of Stillwater.

Harnett posted a winning time of 1:22:04.3, which was more than six minutes in front of runner-up Colin Gardner-Springer (1:28:15.1), who is also from Minneapolis.

Beskau crossed the line in 1:32:14.9 to claim the women’s title by less than three minutes over Allison Luse (1:35:00.9) of Minneapolis.

Brooke Beskau of Hastings was the top finishers in the women’s division at Saturday’s Jon Francis Half-Marathon at Square Lake Park.

There was also an 8-kilometer race held on Saturday, not to mention a 1K fun run in partnership with Lakeview Health and its Power-Up initiative. Each of these events served as a fundraiser for the Jon Francis Foundation, which was created to honor the life of Stillwater graduate Jon Francis, who died at the age of 24 while hiking in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. Francis, who was serving as a youth minister in Utah, was a former standout runner for the Stillwater Ponies and later Augustana College.

Steven Thomas of Delano was the winner of the 8K race with a time of 28:39.2 while Peter Meinz of Golden Valley placed second in 30:27.6. The top local finishers included David Haslam (33:07.9), Chad Halsten (33:36.7) and Eric Lund (34:46.7) of Stillwater and Jerry Buetel (34:47.1) of Afton, who placed fifth through eighth.

In the women’s division, Rebecca Dejarlais of St. Paul crossed the line first with a time of 38:44.8 and Jen Kaupa of Bloomington was next with a time of 39:47.5. Kim Bennett (42:31.5) and Katie Pederson (43:11.8), both of Stillwater, placed fourth and fifth.

Dennis Black of Stillwater was the 60-69 age group winner in the half-marathon with a time of 1:48:41.5 and Candy Patrin of Marine on St. Croix was the first woman to finish from that age group with a time of 2:22:52.5.

Age group winners in the 8K race included Keyan Shayegan and Terry Acers of Stillwater and Buetel in the men’s division and Alicia Simon, Bennett and Beth Soller of Stillwater in the women’s division.
