Boys soccer: Ponies top Forest Lake

FOREST LAKE — The Stillwater boys’ soccer team rallied from an early deficit to overtake Forest Lake 3-1 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference game.

The fourth-ranked Ponies (5-0-1 SEC, 9-1-3) fell behind five minutes into the game as Forest Lake (1-5-0, 4-8-1) countered a Stillwater corner kick with a goal down on the other end.

Stillwater responded to tie the game just three minutes later as Alex Jurcoi took a pass from Max Boedigheimer and looped a shot over the goalkeeper in the eighth minute.

“This team does respond to hits and that was a counter attack and they did well,” Ponies coach Phil Johnson said. “There’s nothing (goalkeeper) Ben (Wilhelm) can do when he has three guys coming at him.”

Patrick Roth provided the game-winner seven minutes into the second half after Nathan Purdie’s through pass turned into a race to the ball between Roth and the Forest Lake goalkeeper. Roth did not get to the ball first but the keeper was unable to control it and Roth pounced it on, took a couple steps and knocked it into the goal for a 2-1 lead.

Roma Devine added a goal for the Ponies from the top of the box midway through the second half after taking a pass from Jared Allen to provide a two-goal cushion.
