Girls tennis: Stillwater wins again

 

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team dispatched White Bear Lake 7-0 in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference match-up at SAHS.

It was the 10th straight victory this season for the Ponies (7-0, 10-1), who moved closer to what could be their first conference championship since 2007 and second since 2000. Stillwater has just two conference matches remaining, including at Cretin-Derham Hall on Tuesday and a home match in their SEC finale against perennial conference heavyweight Mounds View on Thursday.

Stillwater did not lose a set in four singles matches, including wins by Natalie Phippen, Savannah Johnson, Aliza Deming and Jenna Sherrick.

The Ponies also won in straight sets at second and third doubles while Robbie Ellingson and Shelby Anderson posted a 7-5, 3-6), (10-7) victory over Emily Dalhoff and Madisen Crow at first doubles to complete the sweep.

Hannah Quinn and Shelby Ahrendt turned in a 6-4, 6-1 victory at second doubles while Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at third doubles.

“It was fun to get the sweep today,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “It was an exciting match and a nice win at first doubles from Shelby Anderson and Robbie Ellingson.”

n In other matches on Thursday, Stillwater won two exhibition doubles matches and split a pair of singles matches. Emily Frenchik delivered an 8-3 singles win while the doubles teams of Amanda Williams-Remi Larson (8-2) and Emma Germundson-Elizabeth Quinn (8-4) also prevailed. Clara Ilkka dropped fell 8-5 in singles.
