Girls tennis: Stillwater wins ninth in a row

 

ROSEVILLE — Maintaining its hold on the top spot in the Suburban East Conference, Stillwater cruised to a 6-1 victory over Roseville in Tuesday’s girls’ tennis dual.

The Ponies (6-0 SEC, 9-1) did not lose a set in four singles match and also collected victories at second and third doubles to extend their winning streak to nine in a row.

“Roseville has a really nice team, so it was a good win for us,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “I always fear the first match after our weekend in Hibbing, but it all worked out.”

Natalie Phippen topped Greta Norris 6-3, 6-1 at first singles while Savannah Johnson prevailed 6-0, 6-1 at the second spot. Aliza Deming upended Maya McLeod 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Jenna Sherrick held off Sydney Munson 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in what was the closest singles match of the day at fourth singles.

The Raiders collected their lone point at first doubles with Jo Jo Danielson and Jacqlyn Poss holding off Robbie Ellingson and Shelby Anderson 6-0, 7-5.

Hannah Quinn and Amanda Williams posted a 6-3, 6-2 win for the Ponies at second doubles and teammates Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson prevailed by the score of 6-4, 6-4 at third doubles.

n Stillwater also won three exhibition matches on Tuesday, including an 8-3 victory by Elizabeth Quinn over Holly Timming. Stillwater doubles teams Remi Larson and Emma Germundson (8-2) and Emily Frenchik and Clara Ilkka (8-2) also won matches.

n Also on Tuesday, the Stillwater JV team remained undefeated this season after posting a 6-1 victory over Roseville at Stillwater Area High School. The Stillwater C team also defeated the Raiders 4-3.

“We’ve had a really impressive up-and-coming group,” Kahl said.
