Girls tennis: Ponies take over first place in SEC

 

HASTINGS — More than halfway through the season, the Stillwater girls’ tennis team remains the only unbeaten team after knocking off Hastings 5-2 in Thursday Suburban East Conference dual meet.

The Ponies (5-0 SEC, 8-1), who have won eight in a row since falling to Centennial in the season opener, swept all four singles matches and recorded a victory at third doubles to outlast the Raiders on Thursday.

“It was a good, hard-fought match,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “It was nice to win the first four matches off the court.”

Stillwater won each of its five matches in straight sets, although Jenna Sherrick had to work at fourth singles while holding off Anna Foster 7-5, 7-5. Savannah Johnson finished strong while defeating Hailey Lundquist 7-5, 6-3 at second singles.

Natalie Phippen defeated Katie Suchmova 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Aliza Deming prevailed over Morgan Tjomsland 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson picked up a victory for Stillwater with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Abbie Williams and Sammy Dabruzzi at third doubles.

Stillwater’s Hannah Quinn and Shelby Ahrendt dropped a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 decision to Caitlyn Judge and Maddie Carlson at No. 2 doubles and the team of Robbie Ellingson and Shelby Anderson fell short against the Hastings tandem of Jill Weinzettel and Annika Peterson 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot.

“This victory gives us a one-game lead in the conference standings, though we still have four good teams to play,” Kahl said.

n Stillwater split four exhibition matches with the Raiders on Thursday. Emily Frenchik and Clara Ilkka each won singles matches while the teams of Amanda Williams-Emma Germundson and Remi Larson-Elizabeth Quinn were defeated by the Raiders.
