This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Boys cross country — Winning for the third time in as many races, Stillwater’s Collin Bushman and Jake Watson finish second and third to help the Ponies outlast Wayzata 44-57 at the Rochester Mayo Invitational. Stillwater also prevails in the JV race, although the 10th-grade team is not able to race because the bus was late picking up the team from SAHS, leaving the JV team with just 30 minutes to warm up for its race.
Girls cross country — Reigning Class AA individual state champion Ladia Albertson-Junkans wins for the third time in as many races while helping the Stillwater girls’ cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the Rochester Mayo Invitational.
Girls tennis — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team claims a 7-0 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury, but it is hardly a rout as the Ponies win a trio of three-set matches and marathon battle at fourth singles, which junior Gracia Tharp eventually wins after more than two hours by a score of 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Later in the week,
twin sisters Megan and Katie Scully also mirror each other on the court while each winning three-set singles matches after dropping the first set in a 7-0 SEC victory over White Bear Lake.
