Natalie Phippen — Girls tennis
A mainstay in that No. 1 singles spot the past few years, Stillwater’s Natalie Phippen is off to another strong start in her senior campaign for the girls’ tennis team.
Phippen has not lost a set in 11 matches and only one opponent has claimed more than four games in a match this season. The three-time individual state qualifier — once in doubles, twice in singles — posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory as the Ponies held off section rival Mahtomedi on Monday and followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Park on Tuesday to keep the Ponies unbeaten in Suburban East Conference play.
Stillwater (4-0 SEC, 7-1) travels to Hastings for a key conference showdown today.
Nick Anderson — Football
One of the top rushers in the Suburban East Conference a year ago, running back Nick Anderson has picked up where he left off in two victories for the Stillwater football team this fall.
The senior rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries in Friday’s 28-19 victory over rival White Bear Lake. His 50-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter provided the spark that helped the Ponies erase a six-point deficit after three quarters. Anderson was also effective in Stillwater’s 20-18 season-opening victory at Woodbury, finishing with two touchdowns and 95 yards on 21 attempts.
The Ponies (2-0 SEC, 2-0) travel to Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday.
