Girls soccer: Ponies settle for tie against Hill-Murray

MAPLEWOOD — Shelby Litchy scored for the third time in two games, but the Ponies had to settle for a 1-all tie in Wednesday’s nonconference girls’ soccer game at Hill-Murray.

Litchy, who delivered two goals in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over East Ridge, struck again for the Ponies (2-1-0 SEC, 3-3-1) in the 33rd minute of the first half on Wednesday. The senior buried a shot in the far corner of the goal from 20-25 yards out to provide a 1-0 lead.

“She did the same thing against East Ridge,” Stillwater coach Mike Huber said. “She’s got a rocket of a shot and she hits it hard. If it goes on goal, it’s going to go in more often than not.”

The Pioneers (4-1-0), however, answered just a minute later on a goal by Julianna Gemes to tie the game when she chipped the ball over Stillwater goalkeeper Megan Holthaus in the 34th minute.

“It was pretty much a back-and-forth game and both teams had some really good opportunities,” Huber said. “Both keepers came up with some big saves.”

One of those big saves came from Hill-Murray in overtime to thwart Litchy on a breakaway when the goalkeeper came out to make a critical save to keep the game tied.

“Overall, I don’t think it was one of the better games we’ve played this year,” Huber said. “We struggled to string together passes and keep possession of the ball. We have some work to do and we just need to get better at making passes and keeping the ball.”

Holthaus finished with 10 saves for the Ponies.
