Girls soccer: Stillwater blanks Raptors

WOODBURY — Shelby Litchy helped break open a close game with two second-half goals in Stillwater’s 3-0 Suburban East Conference girls’ soccer win over East Ridge on Tuesday — ending a two-game losing streak in the process.

The Ponies (2-1 SEC, 3-3) had the wind at their backs for the first half, but weren’t able to cash in thanks to a somewhat sluggish start, Ponies coach Mike Huber suggested.

“We didn’t have a lot of energy and weren’t connecting on passes,” the coach said. “The second half we came out and played with a little more intensity and started knocking the ball around and playing simple and with some energy.”

Leah Nitardy helped salvage an indifferent first half with a goal in the 23rd minute off a corner kick by Allie Boucher, which led to a scramble in the front of the net before Nitardy knocked in the loose ball.

Earlier in the first half, Maddie Schaak hit the cross bar.

The Ponies, who held an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal, were more conservative in the second half, but Litchy made the most of her opportunities while scoring in the 24th and 32nd minute to build a 3-0 lead. Maddie Anderson assisted on Litchy’s first goal, which she buried from the top of the box, and Abby Ellingson fed Litchy on her second tally.

“It’s kind of the way the season has gone, we tend to be a better second-half team,” Huber said. “We have to light that fire in the first half.”

Megan Holthaus finished with four saves in goal for the Ponies to earn the shutout.
