Girls tennis: Ponies top East Ridge to stay unbeaten in SEC

WOODBURY — With some important matches on the horizon next week, the Stillwater girls’ tennis team dispatched East Ridge 5-2 in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference dual meet at East Ridge High School.

The Ponies (3-0 SEC, 5-1) join Hastings, which knocked off perennial conference heavyweight Mounds View 4-3 on Thursday, remain the only unbeaten teams in league play.

“There is a lot of parity in the conference this year — it would be nice to have a couple of easy ones,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “Hastings had a big win against Mounds View (on Thursday) and we see them next Thursday so that is shaping up to be a big, big conference match.”

Natalie Phippen defeated Maddie Blake 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Savannah Johnson blanked Natalie Curdova 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Aliza Deming also made quick work of Nicole Robinson at third singles while posting a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

“East Ridge has a nice squad this year, so this was a good victory for us,” Kahl said. “Singles once again played really well to lead the way. We lost a couple of close matches at first and second doubles, but had a strong showing at third doubles and all the exhibition matches.”

n Stillwater swept four exhibition matches on Thursday, including a 6-1 singles victory by Clara Ilkka. Emily Frenchik teamed with Amanda Williams (6-1, 6-0) and Emma Germundson (6-0) to post doubles victories for the Ponies while Remi Larson and Elizabeth Quinn also turned in a 7-6 (7-2) doubles triumph.
