The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the county Department of Public Health and Environment and the DEA, holds a voluntary prescription drug “take-back” effort from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29.
The agencies will collect potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at the county Government Center, 14949 62nd St. North in Stillwater. The collection site is in the main lot at the government center with easy drive-through access. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Prescription drug abuse is increasing in the U.S., along with accidental poisonings and overdoses. Many Americans are not aware that medicines left in homes are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, theft, and abuse. Studies show that that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.
Improperly disposing unused medicine by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, are both potential safety and health hazards.
