Lake Elmo crash victims remain hospitalized

Two Stillwater residents and a St. Paul man involved in a two-vehicle, head-on crash in Lake Elmo last week remain hospitalized Wednesday.

A Regions Hospital spokesperson reported that 15-year-old Kalley Sobczak was in ‘fair’ condition, Kalley’s 20-year-old sister, Marah, was in serious condition and 46-year-old Jon Wentz Jr. remains in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

All three were injured in an Aug. 28 accident on Minnesota Highway 5 and Stillwater Lane in Lake Elmo. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Wentz Jr was apparently driving westbound in the eastbound lane of Minnesota 5 when his car struck the vehicle driven Marah Sobczak head on.

A DPS accident report said both Marah Sobczak and Kalley Sobczak were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, but Wentz was not wearing his seatbelt.

Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol said Wednesday that the crash remains under investigation and troopers are waiting for blood tests to come back to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

A search of the Minnesota Criminal case record database shows that Wentz has a long record of various criminal charges, including past traffic charges ranging from DWI, driving after revocation of license and following cars too closely while driving.
