Girls tennis: Stillwater breezes past Royals

WOODBURY — A dominating singles performance on Tuesday helped carry the Stillwater girls’ tennis team to a 6-1 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury.

The Ponies (2-0 SEC, 4-1) lost just six games combined in four singles matches and also claimed two of the three doubles points.

“I felt like we played a little bit like we had just taken a long weekend, but in the end our singles were strong once again and we were able to pull out two of the three pretty close doubles matches,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said.

Natalie Phippen did not lose a game while dispatching Katie Kreibech 6-0, 6-0 at first singles and Savannah Johnston added a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Taylor Monkman at second singles. Aliza Deming cruised past Mackenzie Schurhamer 6-0, 6-1 at the third spot and Jenna Sherrick had little trouble at fourth singles in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brooke Hays.

Two of the doubles matches needed three sets to decide and Stillwater claimed one of those as Shelby Ahrendt and Shelby Anderson held off Shannah Stevenson and Angie Drehmol 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, (10-6) at the first spot. Playing at third doubles, Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson stopped Lisa Blaut and Greta Eisenrich 7-5, 6-3.
