Girls tennis: Stillwater turns back Rangers


OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team picked up a key Suburban East Conference victory on Thursday while topping Forest Lake 5-2 at Stillwater Area High School.

The Rangers were one of just two teams to defeat Stillwater in conference play a year ago. The Ponies (1-0 SEC, 3-1) swept the four singles matches and also notched a victory at second doubles on Thursday.

“It was a big win for the Ponies. Across the board, the girls really played well,” Stillwater coach Dave Kahl said. “Singles were outstanding and, although we only won one doubles match, the level of play was very high.”

Stillwater won handily at the first three singles spots and Jenna Sherrick came from behind to pull out a 3-6, 6-0, (10-3) victory over Megan Anderson at fourth singles.

Natalie Phippen continued her strong play while knocking off Chase Shortly 6-3, 6-0 at first singles and Savannah Johnson did not lose a point while dispatching Taylor Angelo at second singles. Aliza Deming turned in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Taylor Emily at No. 3 singles.

Playing at the second spot, Hannah Quinn and Robbie Ellingson defeated Emily Riermann and Lindsey Tilton 6-1, 6-3 to secure Stillwater’s lone doubles point.

Shelby Anderson and Shelby Ahrendt fell short 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles for the Ponies while Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson lost 6-2, 6-3 at third doubles.

n Stillwater also won two of three exhibition doubles matches on Thursday. Emily Frenchik and Clara Ilkka posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory while Emma Germundson and Elizabeth Quinn also prevailed 6-0, 6-0. The other match was closer, with Stillwater’s Remi Larson and Amanda Williams falling to Bekh Rubio and Katie Lagen 3-6, 6-3, (10-8).
