Girls soccer: Litchy, Purdie pace Stillwater to victory

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — It was all hands on deck for the Stillwater girls’ soccer team on Thursday as eight different players collected at least one point in a 7-0 Suburban East Conference victory over Hastings at Pony Stadium.

Shelby Litchy and Jaime Purdie each delivered two goals for the Ponies while Allie Boucher and Anna Pedersen each provided a goal and an assist.

“The more kids you can have involved makes for a fun environment,” Ponies coach Mike Huber said.

Hastings stymied the Ponies with an offsides trap during the first 20 minutes of the game, but Litchy broke through with the first of her two goals in the 22nd minute on an assist by Hannah Okerstrom. Maddie Anderson added a goal with four minutes remaining in the first half for a 2-0 lead.

“For the first 20 minutes we struggled trying to play against (the trap), but once we started putting the ball on the ground we were able to create opportunities,” Huber said.

Stillwater poured it on with five goals in the second half and outshot the Raiders 18-3 in the game, with Megan Holthaus and Christina Bartingale combining on the shutout.

Purdie scored just 46 seconds into the second half and added a second goal about two minutes later to built a four-goal cushion. Allie Boucher helped set up Purdie’s second goal by carrying the ball from the back and around a midfielder all the way to the end line where she delivered a pass to Purdie, who one-timed it out of the air and into the net.

The scoring continued in the seventh minute as Anna Pedersen scored on an assist by Maddie Schaak and then Pedersen fed Boucher for a goal at 25:31 for a 6-0 advantage. Litchy started and then closed the scoring with her second goal with about 13 minutes remaining to provide the final margin.

“It was a matter of us getting used to playing against a team like that, the other team playing more kick ball, and what do we need to adjust,” Huber said. “We adjusted really well in the second half. We kind of said we need to play the ball early and once we started playing on the ground rather than playing our balls in the air we really took it to them.”

n The Ponies are hosting Youth Soccer Night on Thursday when they host Mounds View in a conference game at SAHS. All St. Croix Soccer Club and VAA youth players wearing their jersey to the game will be admitted free. There will also be some teams playing during halftime of the varsity game.
