CIRCLE PINES — Victories in two of the three matches that required three sets to decide helped Centennial slip past Stillwater 5-2 in Monday’s nonconference girls’ tennis match.
The match started on Wednesday, but was suspended until Monday because of rain — resulting in some changes to the lineup because of player availability.
The Ponies (1-1) won at first and second singles, but fell short at third and fourth singles and were swept in the doubles matches.
“The rain-delayed matches didn’t help our cause, but the girls who filled in played hard and represented the Ponies well, even if they couldn’t pull out their matches,” Stillwater coach Dave Kahl said.
Stillwater’s Natalie Phippen remained unbeaten in five matches this season with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Jenna Sundstrom at first singles and Savannah Johnson followed with a 3-6, 6-3, (10-6) win over Kelly Jachymowski at second singles.
Charlotte Hudgens of Centennial bounced back after dropping the first set to defeat Emily Frenchik 5-7, 6-3, (10-7) at fourth singles. The Cougars also won in three sets at second doubles where Meghan Longen and Megan Bona defeated Shelby Ahrendt and Jackie Ellingson 3-6, 6-4, (10-7).
n Also on Monday, Stillwater’s Clara Ilkka lost exhibition doubles matches while paired with Remi Larson and Elizabeth Quinn.
