Girls tennis: Stillwater blanks Polars


OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ tennis team did not lose a set while breezing past North St. Paul for a 7-0 nonconference victory on Friday at Stillwater Area High School.

It was the first dual meet of the season for the Ponies (1-0), who placed second at the eight-team McGuire Invitational a week earlier.

Stillwater lost just five games combined in four singles matches, starting with Natalie Phippen’s 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kyla Mittal at the first spot. Jenna Sherrick followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles and Robbie Ellingnson notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot. Playing at fourth singles, Shelby Ahrendt did not lose a game while blanking Katie Roberto 6-0, 6-0.

All three of Stillwater’s doubles teams won by the same score of 6-2, 6-1, including Aliza Deming and Savannah Johnson over Taylor Thiets and Lindsay Warner at the first spot. Hannah Quinn and Jackie Ellingson followed with a victory over Amy Glaus and Breana Payton at second doubles while Maggie Corman and Amanda Williams topped Bobbie Morelli and Allison Ly at the third spot.

n Stillwater won two exhibitions doubles matches on Friday, with Emily Frenchik and Clara Ilkka posting an 8-2 victory and Emma Germundson and Elizabeth Quinn prevailing 8-3. Remi Larson dropped a singles match by the score of 8-6.
