How can I know God loves me?
“How can I know that God loves me” is an often-asked question. The great proof of God’s love is found in Romans 5:8 that reads, “God commended his love to us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Three were brought to Calvary’s brow and crucified: two because they were so bad, and One because he was so good. Approved of God (Acts 2:22), but cursed by the mob, Jesus went meekly to the place of execution that He might bear our sin and save a lost world. Because of His great love for us, He paid redemption’s price that you and I might go free. Hallelujah, what a Savior.
At the dawn of the Christian era, a Roman girl of high birth and culture haughtily refused the attention of all eligible young men who sought to court her.
“No one shall ever win my heart,” she said, “unless he gives me proof that he would die for me.”
Years passed, and then one day she heard one of Christ’s followers speaking of Him. With rapt attention she listened to the story of the crucifixion. The Holy Spirit did His wondrous work, and the beams of grace illuminated her darkened soul. In amazement she exclaimed, “Here is the One who died for me; He alone shall have my heart’s devotion.”
The blessed Savior should also inspire the same response in our soul.
In Stroudsburg, Pa., one can find the grave of a celebrated soldier. The stone bears these words: “Abraham Lincoln’s substitute.” Amidst the anguish of America’s tragic Civil War, the Lincoln had chosen to honor this man as his representative — making him a symbol of the fact that those who perished in the battle were dying that others might live.
As each person reaches out by faith to the Christ of the cross, he or she too can say, “He was my Substitute — He died for me.”
