• Kathy Buchholz reported on the 916 work session that was held on June 21st 916 work session. The topic was the EMID topic of cultural competencies. Reported that Valley Crossing Community School hired Julie Hartmann as principal.

A. Health and Safety Policy First Reading
Mr. Dennis Bloom, director of operations, presented the updates to the Health and Safety Policy. State Statute 123B.57 requires that each district have in place a health and safety policy that must include provisions for implementing a health and safety program that complies with health, safety, and environmental regulations and best practices including indoor air quality management. The Policy Working Group reviewed updates to the current policy on June 19 and at the Board Learning session on June 28.

The Minnesota Department of Education requires districts to approve a Health and Safety Policy for the 2012-2013 school year. As part of the submittal process, the district must include a three fiscal year Health and Safety budget and the Board minutes approving both the budget and the policy. Annually, after the 2012-2013 school year, only Board approval of the budget will be required. Approval of the policy will be requested at the July 19, 2012 business meeting.
B. Video Surveillance Policy First Reading
Mr. Dennis Bloom, director of operations, presented the updates to the Video Surveillance Policy. State Statute 121A.585 requires notice be given if a recording device is used on a school bus. If a video or audio device is placed on a school bus, the bus must contain a sign or signs, conspicuously placed, notifying riders that their conversations or actions may be recorded. Updates to the current policy, R 1.16 to include buses were reviewed by the Board Policy Working group on June 19 and was reviewed at the Board Learning Session on June 28. Approval of the policy will be requested at the July 19, 2012 business meeting.
X. Action Items
A. Principal Fields requested approval of the annually reviewed Discipline Policy. The policy was reviewed by the board and presented as a first reading at the June 14, 2012 business meeting.

D. Safe Schools Fund Balance Transfer
