Authorities identify body found in St. Croix River

            Washington County Sheriff’s Office investigators are trying to identify a badly decomposed body found floating in the St. Croix River near Afton late Sunday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies were called shortly before noon Sunday to Mile Mark 11 across from the Windmill Marina, 16065 32nd St., in Afton, according to a WCSO spokesman.             There, deputies found a body floating in a “significant state of decomposition” in the water, the spokesman said.

The body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy, the WCSO spokesman said. The incident remains under investigation.

Update 4:20 p.m.

The badly decomposed body found in the St. Croix River near Afton late Sunday morning has been identified as a man suspected of drowning after falling through ice on the river more than two years ago.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body as 28-year-old Timothy Michael Pease, said Washington County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Brian R. Mueller.

There, deputies found a body in a “significant state of decomposition” floating in the water, the spokesman said.

Mueller said it is believed Pease drowned after he fell through river ice in February 2010.
