St. Croix Swim Club places fourth at state

The St. Croix Swim Club competed in the Minnesota State Championships from July 26-29 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, placing fourth overall with 2,277 points.

The only teams scoring more points than the Silver Rays were the Aquajets, Edina Swim Club and Rochester.

Six St. Croix Swim Club athletes captured one or more individual state titles and the Silver Rays also won two relays. Individual state champions included: Jon Busse (Boys 11-12 age group, 50, 100 and 200 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 and 400 freestyle); Sam Larson (Boys 11-12, 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly and 200 IM); Lianna Wood (Girls 11-12, 50, 100 and 200 breaststroke); Mickayla Hinkle (Girls 15-16, 100 backstroke); Mary Knaak (Girls 15-16, 1,500 freestyle); Stephanie LeMire (Girls 15-16, 200 breaststroke).

The Silver Rays also won two relays at the state championships in the girls’ 11-12 age group, including the 200 freestyle relay with Lianna Wood, Asia Neuman, Olivia Bloomquist and Ciana Fragnito and the 400 medley relay with Newman, Wood, Ellie Speedling and Fragnito.

Competing in the 11-12 age group, Jon Busse finished first in the high-point award standings while Sam Larson (boys 11-12) and Lianna Wood (girls 11-12) each placed second in their age groups.

Several swimmers are also Central Zone qualifiers for Team Minnesota, including: Gabriella Baldwin, Madison Berg, Aidan Bloomquist, Olivia Bloomquist, Jesse Busse, Jon Busse, Ciana Fragnito, Abby Kunze, Sam Larson, Asia Neuman, Catherine Nolde, Ellie Speedling and Lianna Wood in the 14-under age group and Brady Anderson, Sophia Bisch, Kylie Burgess, Kristin Erf, Erika Guenther, Steph LeMire, Claire Ruetscher, Emma Stacy and Natalie Wood in the 15-over division.

Mickayla Hinkle is scheduled to represent the SCSC at the Junior National Meet in Indianapolis starting on Aug. 13.
