Birds are the topic of a Washington County Parks campfire program and hike Aug. 11.
The Warner Nature Center presents a campfire program on red-tailed hawks at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 11, at the Lake Elmo Park Reserve. Visitors will meet the red-tailed hawk, master of adaptations. When a live hawk visits the park, become a naturalist and discover the adaptations that have let this large bird thrive from coast to coast.
The Carpenter Nature Center presents a program called “Bird Banding” at 7:15 p. m. Aug. 11, at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park. Join CVNC Director Jim Fitzpatrick, a licensed bird bander, to learn about some of the native songbirds. Watch as he sets up devices to capture the local songbirds and then studies them, marks and releases them back into the forest. Find out why they are important to people and what information they reveal. Open to all ages and abilities.
Washington County Parks invites campers and visitors to participate in a family-friendly, guided bird hike at St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 11.
Participants will learn more about the birds who call Minnesota home as they walk the scenic prairie and wooded trails of the lower St. Croix Valley with volunteer and birding enthusiast Shelley Bowman.
The bird hike is one hour long and meets near the park’s outdoor amphitheater. The trail terrain varies between grass and gravel and is rated easy to moderate. This bird hike program is free to park visitors with a valid park permit ($5/day or $25/annual). Camping is available, although reservations are not required to participate. Permits may be purchased at the park contact station.
