OPH man dies in Lake Elmo wreck

LAKE ELMO — An Oak Park Heights man died in a single-car accident early today in Lake Elmo.
The name of the 22-year-old victim was withheld by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office pending notification of next-of-kin, according to deputy Sgt. Mike Brown.
Shortly before 3:15 a.m. today, the WCSO Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from a person reporting the crash in the 3000 block of Lake Elmo Avenue North, Brown said.
Deputies arriving on scene found the victim ejected from the vehicle, Brown said. Lake Elmo Fire and Rescue personnel also responded to clean a fuel leak from the damaged vehicle, Brown added.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation, Brown said.
The Lake Elmo accident was the third fatality wreck in the last three days on St. Croix Valley roads.
Late Tuesday night, a section of Interstate 94 near Menomonie, Wis., was closed for five hours after an accident involving two 18-wheelers left on driver dead and the other driver injured.
Wisconsin State Patrol said Tuesday’s accident occurred about 11 p.m. when one 18-wheeler struck another 18-wheeler from behind, sparking a fire. Troopers added that the victim in that wreck was pronounced dead at the scene.
One day earlier, Wisconsin State Troopers responded to an accident on I-94 in Hudson that killed two New Richmond High School students and left two other students injured.
Troopers said the accident occurred when an SUV driven by 17-year-old Zachary Zajac collided with a stopped 18-wheeler. Two passengers in Zajac’s vehicle, Joshua J. Goodrich, 17, and Jordan M. Johnson, 16, died in the accident. Zajac and a third passenger, Thomas Wanless, 17, were injured.
Both I-94 accidents remain under investigation.
