HASTINGS — Stillwater’s Hudson Carpenter finished 25th to lead the list of area players competing at this week’s Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur at Hastings Country Club.

Jordan Hawkinson of Grant taps in a short putt on No. 9 (his final hole) in the third round of the MGA State Amateur on Wednesday at Hastings Country Club.

After entering the third and final round in 14th place, the South Dakota State University junior-to-be shot a 78 on Wednesday slide out of the top 15, which would have made him exempt from qualifying for next year’s tournament.

Carpenter finished with a three-day total of 225, which was 12 shots behind winner Frederick Van Rooyen, a University of Minnesota senior who finished at 213. Sammy Schmitz of Valleywood Golf Course, David Christensen of Elk River Country Club and Matt Schneider of Pokegama Golf Club finished three shots behind Van Rooyen in second place at 216.

Stillwater graduate and former University of South Dakota player Kyle Scanlon turned in a 3-over 74 in the final round for a 228 total that moved him into a tie for 38th place. Steve Chesley, who like Scanlon plays out of Dellwood Hills Golf Club, finished one shot back at 229 to tie for 42nd place.

Carpenter had just two bogeys on the front nine this week until back-to-back doubles on No. 8 and 9 on Wednesday. All five of his birdies came on the front side — the nines were reversed so this is the back nine for normal play at HCC — where he was a combined 1-over in the tournament, but finished plus-11 in three rounds on the inward nine.

Scanlon also shot better on the front side, finishing 2-over for three rounds compared to 13 over on the back — this despite the fact that scoring averages were nearly identical for the front (38.973) and back (38.910) nines, although holes 10-18 played to a par of 35.

Jordan Hawkinson of Grant placed 50th after a final-round 77 gave him a three-round total of 231 and Larry Barnacle of Sawmill Golf Club finished at 234, good enough for 58th place.

Erik Christopherson of Stillwater withdrew after the second round while Scott Nagel of StoneRidge GC (159) and Brandon Howe Sawmill (161) did not make the cut for the final round.
