Washington County property owners unhappy with their property tax assessment had the chance to state their case Tuesday evening before the Washington County Board of Commissioners meeting as the county’s Board of Appeal and Equalization.
Property owners who contacted the Tax Assessor’s office about their tax assessment were given time to speak to the Board of Appeal about their situation.
State law requires commissioners meet as the Board of Appeal to examine and equalize county property assessments. Commissioners have the power to reduce or increase property values or change classification of property.
After hearing from property owners Tuesday night, commissioners adjourned as the Board of Appeal until June 19. At that Board of Appeal session, commissioners will review recommendations and responses to questions from staff, discuss each case and act on appeals.
Commissioners will also act on value changes agreed to by the assessor’s office and property owners prior to the Board of Appeal meeting.
