Students learn the art of 3D

Students at Afton-Lakeland Elementary looked to the future and into the high-tech world of 3D printing without even having to leave their classroom. Larry Doerr, an Afton-Lakeland parent and senior vice president of Research and Development and Operations at STRATASYS – a leader in the 3D printing industry – gave students a peek into creating 3D objects. Doerr used a 3D printer to demonstrate the process of creating 3D objects to more than 400 students. Students were able to hear about how fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology works, view videos that showed its many uses and applications, learn how computer-aided design (CAD) software is used to design objects, see and touch numerous items actually printed in a 3D printer and observe the printer in action as it printed a "surprise" object for their school.
