Softball: Rhode, Balzart propel Ponies

WOODBURY – The Stillwater softball team snapped an 18-inning scoreless streak just in the nick of time to overtake Woodbury 2-1 in Monday’s Suburban East Conference game.

The Ponies (9-6 SEC, 9-6), who hadn’t scored since the third inning of an extra-inning loss against Cretin-Derham Hall on May 2, rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh on Monday to slip past Woodbury.

Rachel Rhode did her part to keep Stillwater in the game after allowing an unearned run in the first inning. The junior allowed just two hits and four walks while striking out 11 in the complete game.

"Rhode pitched real well," Ponies coach Bob Beedle said. "She had the rise ball working nicely and they were having difficulty with it."

The Royals used an error, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double from Samantha Kosel to score their only run of the game and it was nearly enough for Alise Jacobsen, who yielded two runs on four hits while taking a shutout into the seventh.

Allison Pasiuk walked to start the seventh for Stillwater before Dani Wigen reached on a fielder’s choice. Carlie Hart drove a single up the middle and Haley Balzart – after falling behind 0-2 in the count – followed with a two-out, two-run double to provide the difference.

"We put a little more pressure from the third inning on and we put the ball in play more firmly and eventually got our chance in the seventh and Balzart came through for us," Beedle said.
