Learn signs of impending suicide, act to prevent it

You do not ask to be born nor do you ask to die, except if you are suicidal.

Extreme cases of depression cause suicide, which has mystified mankind to this day. The organization Suicide Awareness Voices of Education is trying to get the word out to the general public so everyone can learn to spot the signs of impending suicide.

Former U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone and a Republican Senator proposed that health insurance cover both mental illness and other physical illnesses. It took 12 years before it

Republicans must think they will never have to deal with mental illness when in fact, four to five families are affected. I presented three resolutions at our Lake Elmo Caucus that had been prepared by National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-MN). There were very few votes for them. For information, call 651-645-2948.

Half of the homeless are mentally ill with no resources for medical care. Veterans’ organizations now employ mental health workers for post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among ages 15 to 24 years. Elderly people 65 years and older vs. the national average die by suicide at a disproportionate rate of 14.3 per 100,000 vs. 11.3 per 100,000. The statistics are from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
