SAHS Athletes of the Week
Kelcie Kempenich – Girls track and field
The Stillwater girls’ track and field team has been flying under the radar for much of the season while racking up one first-place finish after another.
Kelcie Kempenich is among a balanced group of competitors that has carried the Ponies to four straight victories in multi-team events, including the SEC Relays and invitationals at Apple Valley, Park and most recently at Filly Classic on Friday at Pony Stadium, where Stillwater held off Forest Lake 138-111 for the top spot. Kempenich anchored first-place finishes in the 4×200 and 4×400 relays and a runner-up showing in the high jump event.
The Ponies are set to host the Section 2AAA True Team meet today at SAHS.
Jeff Burridge – Boys lacrosse
Following the departure of an all-conference goaltender a year ago, senior Jeff Burridge has stepped in an filled the role impressively for the Stillwater boys’ lacrosse team this spring.
Burridge made nine saves in Monday’s 7-6 conference victory over East Ridge and turned away five shots in a 7-4 victory over Woodbury last week. He also allowed just two goals in Wednesday night’s 17-3 victory over Forest Lake as the Ponies ran their conference winning streak to three in a row. His 6.36 goals against average ranks ninth in the state this season and his .607 save percentage is also among the state leaders.
Stillwater (6-1 SEC, 7-4) host Spring Lake Park in a game on Saturday.
