Girls track and field: Ponies fourth at True Team state

By STUART GROSKREUTZ – Stillwater Gazette

OAK PARK HEIGHTS – The Stillwater girls’ track and field team landed in a familiar spot on Friday while placing fourth in the True Team state meet at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies have placed fourth at state five times in their past 11 appearances, also missing out on third-place medals in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2010. Stillwater has now finished in the top five in six of the past eight years.

Lakeville South outdistanced Prior Lake 880-822.5 for the state title while Suburban East Conference rival Mounds View scored 725 points to leave Stillwater in fourth at 713.5, just three points in front of fifth-place Minnetonka.

"We were really happy to get fourth place," Ponies coach Dawn Podolske said. "We probably beat some teams that on paper we weren’t supposed to beat. We wish we had gotten 12 more points to get into medal range, but we had some great performances. I was just real tickled for the kids. To be fourth in the state is a pretty awesome thing."

Stillwater finished first in two of the four relays and also received a first-place showing from senior Kelcie Kempenich in the 400 meters with a time of 57.99.

Kempenich also joined Alex Crain, Bethany Adkins and Natalie Phippen to win the 4×200 relay in a time of 1:44.23 and anchored Stillwater’s winning 4×400 relay team (3:59.74) that also included Fiona Montie, Phippen and Maria Morley.

The 4×200 victory was especially rewarding after Stillwater was disqualified in the event at the section meet.

The Ponies also placed third in the 4×100 (50.01) and 4×800 (9:46.25) relays, which are worth more points than individual events.

"Our relays have really been coming through for us. We really looked pretty awesome on the track with the relays," Podolske said. "Kelcie winning the quarter was a really outstanding performance."

Crain (26.43) and Phippen (26.61) placed third and fourth to provide a strong showing in the 200 meters and the Ponies placed three athletes among the top 10 in the long jump – led by versatile Anna Posbergh in sixth with a distance of 17-6 3/4. Alicia Doerr (17-6 3/4) and Karina Ikuta (17-2 1/4) followed in seventh and 10th in the long jump for Stillwater.

Posbergh also finished third in the pole vault after clearing 10-6.

Cassie Pratt (11:26.02) and Larissa Colvin (11:32.72) placed fifth and sixth in the 3,200 meters while Maria Morley crossed the line in 5:23.70 to place seventh in the 1,600. Abby Lange added a sixth-place finish in the 800.

"I think the two-milers really helped us out towards the end of the meet," Podolske said. "Cassie ran a nice race and that was good for us.

"I just think we overall were in the top half of the standings more than the lower half."
