RED WING – The Stillwater girls’ golf team experienced the first blip in an otherwise exemplary season on Tuesday while placing seventh at the highly regarded Red Wing Invitational at Mississippi National Golf Links.

The top-ranked Ponies had won seven consecutive events prior to Tuesday, but posted a score of 333 to finish 15 shots behind reigning state champion Wayzata (318) in a field that included most of the top teams in the state. Red Wing and Eastview tied for second place behind Wayzata with scores of 320 while New Prague (322), Detroit Lakes (323) and Minnewaska (326) also finished in front of Stillwater.

"As we thought, it was the best field of the year," Ponies coach Mike O’Rourke said. "Probably not a bad thing for us to lose before sections and state. You would rather do it now when it doesn’t really mean anything than later when it really matters."

Cassie Deeg led the Ponies with an even-par 71 to finish just one shot behind individual medalist Sarah Burnham (70) of Wayzata. Hailey Boner tied for 11th overall with a score of 79. Alex Zeuli (90) and Amanda Wolf (93) completed the scoring for Stillwater, which also received a 95 from Erin Thiets and a 105 from Leah Kroenning.
