FOREST LAKE – The Stillwater girls’ golf team has removed much of the drama for Thursday’s Suburban East Conference tournament, at least on the top end.
The Ponies secured their third straight conference championship with a victory – their ninth in as many league events this spring – on Monday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Stillwater posted a score of 175 to hold off second-place East Ridge (186) by 11 shots, marking the Ponies’ slimmest margin of victory in the conference all season. Forest Lake and Woodbury followed in third with matching scores of 187.
"It was not the best, but we clinched so Thursday we are playing for pride," Ponies coach Mike O’Rourke said. "It would be great to run the table and win from start to finish. I don’t think anyone in SEC history has gone undefeated in conference play, which is good incentive for Thursday."
White Bear Lake’s Abbie Mozetti claimed medalist honors with a 2-over par 38, but Cassie Deeg and Hailey Boner were not far behind to pace Stillwater with a 39 and 40. Alex Zeuli (47) and Erin Thiets (48) completed the scoring for the Ponies, who also received a 53 from Anna Kaul and a 56 from Amanda Wolf.
