Rain washed out the Suburban East Conference Tournament, but the Stillwater girls’ golf team had already secured its third consecutive title with an undefeated run through the conference after collecting nine victories in as many events.
The conference finale was slated for Oak Glen on Thursday, but the weather was unwilling to cooperate.
"We tried most of the afternoon to get our conference tournament in, but the weather prevailed," Stillwater coach Mike O’Rourke said. "Around 5 p.m., it was decided that the course was unplayable with standing water on fairways, greens and in bunkers. Seeing that the team title was already determined and virtually all the all-conference was set, it was determined to cancel without a reschedule."
No previous team has ever cruised through an SEC campaign unblemished.
Four Ponies received All-SEC honors based on their play throughout the season, including Cassie Deeg, Hailey Boner, Erin Thiets and Alex Zeuli.
Deeg and Boner ranked second and third in scoring average behind Cretin-Derham Hall’s Celia Kuenster, who led the way at 35.25. Deeg turned in a 36.625 average while Boner was next at 39.375 and Thiets ranked sixth with an average of 42.875. Zeuli was also a steady performer with a 44.25 scoring average to give the Ponies four of the top 11 individuals in the conference.
"The only bad thing that happened was that Amanda Wolf didn’t have the chance to attain all-conference (honorable mention) honors," O’Rourke said. "She finished one person out – one-tenth of a stroke – out of contention."
Stillwater is set to compete at the Section 4AAA meet at Tanners Brook on Tuesday, where the Ponies will try to advance to state for the fourth year in a row.
Final SEC standings
1. Stillwater 90; 2. East Ridge 68; 3. Mounds View 54; 4. Woodbury 53; 5, tie, Roseville 47 and Cretin-Derham Hall 47; 7. Forest Lake 38; 8. Hastings 34; 9. Park 17; 10. White Bear Lake 3.
