Girls golf: Boner leads Ponies to SEC triumph

By STUART GROSKREUTZ – Stillwater Gazette

HASTINGS – The Stillwater girls’ golf team continued its unbeaten run through the Suburban East Conference while posting a 17-shot victory at Monday’s 18-hole event at Hastings Country Club.

The Ponies turned in a score of 341 to outdistance runner-up East Ridge (358) and third-place Cretin-Derham Hall (362), which was led by individual medalist Celia Kuenster – who fired a 3-under par 69.

Hailey Boner carded a 79 to lead the Ponies while Cassie Deeg followed with an 83. Erin Thiets was not far behind with an 84 while Alex Zeuli completed the scoring with a 95.

"Cassie had a tough day, but that happens in golf sometimes," Ponies coach Mike O’Rourke said. "Erin had a nice rebound after a tough week."

Amanda Wolf shot 103 and Anna Nelson filled out the card with a 105 for the Ponies, who have won each of their seven conference events by 13 strokes or more this season.

"Amanda and Anna played pretty good on a tough course that they had never played," O’Rourke said. "Other than Cassie and Hailey, no one had ever played the back side, which is one of the best in our conference."
