Author of ‘Hit by a Farm, The Compassionate Carnivore" visits Stillwater
Award-winning author, Catherine Friend, will round out the spring 2012 "Writers on Writing" lineup with a presentation at 7 p.m. June 7 at Art Reach St. Croix.
Friend’s books include "The Compassionate Carnivore," winner of a Minnesota Book Award and "Hit by a Farm," selected by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as one of the best books of 2006. Her children’s books have won numerous awards including the Loft/McKnight Fellowship in Children’s Literature.
A recent Publishers Weekly review stated, "Friend regales readers with funny and fascinating tales of daily life on the farm. Her voice is wry and funny; she’s self-deprecating and thoughtful, and strikes a balance between teasing and kindness, whether her subject is pregnant sheep, yarn-loving ‘fiber freaks,’ or spirituality and nature. "
Friend, a one-time "city girl," currently lives on a farm in southeastern Minnesota where she writes, edits and raises cattle, chickens and sheep. She teaches writing workshops and is a popular speaker at libraries, festivals and schools.
Writers on Writing is sponsored by ArtReach St. Croix. The goal of the program is to bring authors into the community to talk about writing, publishing and the writing life. Previous speakers include Michael Perry, Lorna Landvik and Chuck Logan.
ArtReach St. Croix is at 224 N. 4th St, Stillwater across from the Stillwater Public Library. The event includes the presentation, question-and-answer session, book signing and the opportunity to mingle with other writers, artists and book lovers.
The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Writers on Writing is sponsored by Valley Bookseller of Stillwater and supported through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council.
