Boys tennis: Stillwater falls short against Zephyrs

OAK PARK HEIGHTS – The Ponies didn’t go quietly, but top-seeded Mahtomedi had too much firepower while knocking out the Stillwater boys’ tennis team 6-1 in Monday’s Section 4AA semifinals at Stillwater Area High School.

Stillwater finished the season with a 7-10 records while the defending section champion Zephyrs will face third-seeded Roseville, a 6-1 semifinal winner over St. Paul Highland Park, in the finals on Wednesday at SAHS.

"The guys really competed well," Stillwater coach Dave Kahl said. "Overall, it may well have been our best effort as a whole."

Mitchell Johnson dropped the first set in his match at third singles, but rallied for a 6-7 (8-6), 6-3, 6-4 win over Mahtomedi’s Cooper Schwieters to provide the lone point for the Ponies.

Ty Young turned back Stillwater’s Colton Anderson 7-5, 6-2 at first singles and Kishore Damodaran held off Sam Stiff 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) at No. 2 singles. Ryan Meger added a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stillwater’s Nick Rheinberger at fourth singles.

The Zephyrs swept the three doubles matches, but needed three sets at second doubles and a tie-breaker to close out a narrow victory at third doubles.

Stillwater’s Max Wilkinson and Stone Xiong won the first set against Ryder Comfort and Zach Plooster at second doubles before falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Nick Folz and Brady Tynen also lost a close match against Mark Oldani and Derek Johnson at third doubles by the score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

"We lost four very tightly contested matches at first and second singles and second and third doubles and Mitch Johnson pulled out an impressive victory at third singles," Kahl said. "There were long, competitive matches and there were moments when we were ahead in four of the matches. In the end, they were a little too strong, but it was rewarding as a coach to see the improvement and effort of our team."

Mahtomedi added a win at first doubles with Teddy Bowie and Hardt Bergmann defeated Scott Xiong and Daniel Ahrendt 6-1, 6-2.

Stillwater was blanked by the Zephyrs 7-0 earlier this season.

n In exhibition singles matches on Monday, Stillwater’s Brian Treacy defeated Spencer Wick 8-1 while Victor Ary lost to Wick 8-3. Mahtomedi’s Jed Magnuson and Jason Smyth blanked Nate Anderson and Matt Treacy 6-0, 6-0.
