Boys golf: Sicard paces Stillwater at Oak Glen

Freshman Sammy Sicard claimed medalist honors for the second event in a row and he had plenty of company in the 70s as the Stillwater boys’ golf team dominated Friday’s eight-team invitational at Oak Glen Golf Course.

The Ponies finished with a score of 299 to place a whopping 22 shots in front of runner-up Cretin-Derham Hall (321) and third-place Legacy Christian Academy (336). Host St. Croix Preparatory Academy finished fifth at 357, led by Caleb Zimmermann and Cole Robinson with matching 87s and Sam Caspers with an 88.

Coach John Scanlon said the score was Stillwater’s lowest in 10 seasons – in windy conditions to boot.

Sicard, who also posted the low score in Stillwater’s most recent conference match at Stillwater Country Club, carded a 72 on Friday, followed by teammates Lars Lillehei and Anthony Johnson with matching 75s. Jeff Carstens completed the scoring with a 77 and Bennett Anderson was just one shot back with a throwaway score of 78. Charley Clements added an 85 for the Ponies.

"Sammy is really hitting his stride with two wins in a row," Scanlon said. "While 72 is an impressive score, it could have been even better. Sammy bogeyed two downwind par-5s after striping two 300-yard drives right down the middle.

"From a team perspective, the big news was the excellent scoring by Lars and Anthony. Lars has been working hard on his putting. Anthony has been working on his swing and used a birdie-eagle finish to turn a solid round into a low round."
