Schools across Independent School District 834 will operate with new starting and dismissal times next year.

The ISD 834 board will vote on new start and dismissal times for all district schools. District officials estimate the new times will save the district nearly $300,000 in transportation costs. Discussions about changing the start and dismissal times arose during the district’s budget adjustments process.

The proposal offers the following times:

* Stillwater Area High School, 7:40 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.

* Stillwater and Oak-Land Junior highs, 7:50 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.

* Elementary schools begin at 8:40 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.

The district’s proposal also includes the start and dismissal times for non-ISD 834 schools in the area for comparison, including New Heights School, St. Croix Catholic, Salem Lutheran, Valley Crossing and St. Croix Preparatory Academy, which all start after 9 a.m.

The second item up for approval tonight is the academic calendar for next year.

In addition to the two action items, the board will receive four reports from staff, including reports on the Valley Crossing Community School, website project update, student transportation procurement and the finance advisory council.

Before the business meeting the board will meet for its learning session to discuss insurance renewals and budget adjustment work for the 2013-2014 school year.

The learning session begins at 5 p.m. and the business meeting begins at 7:15 p.m. Both will be held at City Hall and are open to the public.
